Scouting Centenary Jamboree - 06 July 2007

With regret, we have had to withdraw from involvement with the Scouting Centenary Jamboree at Hylands Park. At a late stage in the planning negotiations the organisers insisted on making a charge for attendance, and this would have come to far more than we can justify spending.

The intention was to have an exhibition stand, a mini-ring, hand bell lapping and handbell demonstrations, which between them would have required about 20 people for each day we attended. The organisers wanted to charge each volunteer £10. Many thanks to all who have put in so much hard work for no result, especially Libby Laurence and Wendy Godden.
The Scouting Centenary is still an opportunity for favourable local publicity for ringing and recruitment. We would encourage all towers to arrange some special ringing to mark the centenary, if possible on Wednesday 1 August, and to invite their local scout groups to visit and experience some ringing.

As the Harwich bells are not in a condition suitable for peal ringing, the tenor bell, fully muffled, was tolled 127 times this afternoon by a member of the local band, Vince Lungley.
